Regional Strategies

The Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) and its partners have cooperated to create a draft Strategy on the Promotion of Education for Sustainable Development in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Guidelines for Southern African participation in the UN DESD are being developed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), aiming to combine the aims of the DESD with the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) and NEPAD Plan of Implementation.

UNESCO-Nairobi is setting up an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Portal for its cluster countries – Burundi, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Uganda and the sub-region. The ESD portal will facilitate information sharing, international dialogue and links to the global ESD arena. For an example of a national strategy, view the Kenyan National Implementation Strategy here

Developing Indicators

From 27-30 November 2006 , a workshop on the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development was organised by the Harare and Windhoek UNESCO cluster offices. Participants from Angola, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland (Windhoek cluster), and Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe (Harare cluster) called for the development of indicators for the African continent.
