UNESCO Santiago is leading ESD efforts in the region, linking them to other education initiatives such as Education for All (EFA) and the Regional Education Project for Latin America and the Caribbean (PRELAC) agreed upon by the Ministers of Education of the region in November, 2002. The regional ESD strategy is available in Spanish here.
The Global Environmental Citizenship Project (2005-2007) is a region-wide ESD project in South and Meso America undertaken by the World Conservation Union’s Commission on Education and Communication, UNEP and the the Global Environment Facility (GEF). Countries taking part include Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru.
Developing Indicators
The Americas Capacity Assessment Project seeks to strengthen capacity for environmental management and sustainable development (ESD) in the Americas. It is a joint initiative of IISD, the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) and UNEP through their Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean. The first component of the project identifies hemispheric gaps and priorities for ESD capacity and institution building, increases awareness of ESD issues among policy-makers in the Americas and engages Latin American and Caribbean civil society and government partners.
