United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD)
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) is the designated lead agency in the UN system to the promotion of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) (2005-2014).
In the UK, the Decade was launched in December 2005 in a conference organised by the UK National Commission for UNESCO. This website aims to provide a map of information and resources on DESD both in the UK and internationally.
A Quick Brief
Education for Sustainable development (ESD) is a vision that aims to inclusively empower all people to take charge, cooperate and create a sustainable future. ESD particularly maintains the importance of culture and society in the transition towards a sustainable future. With global diversity and the number of stakeholders involved, the greatest challenge that ESD faces is ensuring multilateral cooperation between ALL stakeholders and finding a negotiable balance between ALL their priorities and interests.
